Class of '23: Icon Meeka Alpha Omega

Class of ’23 is a series bringing sexual health, community, and movement together. Join us for a night of free programming at Ace Hotel Toronto, where together, we’ll dive into the importance of HIV education, get to know some of Ballroom’s most influential performers, and explore the beauty of voguing.

For our April edition, our friends at Maggie’s will kick things off with a workshop on HIV History and Stigma, followed by a Vogue masterclass and Q&A session with Icon Meeka Alpha Omega.

ABOUT MEEKA

A mother, Hall of Famer, and well-respected fixture of the House and Ballroom community, Meeka has been hitting the floor with fervour since the mid-1990s, inspiring new generations of performers since. She sealed her Legendary status in 2008, stepping into the Iconic lane eight years later, in 2016, and becoming a Philadelphia Hall of Fame Inductee in 2023. As Queen Mother of the House of Alpha Omega, faculty at the Crystal La’Beija Organizing Fellowship and Keeping Ballroom Alive Community Network, and recipient of the Octavia St. Laurent Trailblazer and Avis Penda’vis Angel Awards, her work within community extends well off the runway, spearheading survival, educational, and empowerment efforts to include and support priority populations. Her mastery of Vogue and the life-changing impact she’s had on those around her have landed her features with Rolling Stone Magazine, Coach, GLAAD, and the Daily Show, to name a few. But mostly importantly, through decades of radical love, selflessness, and passion, Meeka has landed herself in the hearts of so many of us in Ballroom, and we’re honoured to welcome her to our city.
